Smith Machine Squat Variation – The feet are repositioned several inches in front (15-20 inches for me) at a wide stance to activate the hamstrings and the gluteal muscles while not completely deactivating the quads. The key is to align the spine in the same path as the guiding rods of the machine. Also remember to squeeze on the gluteal muscles ascending and on the top of the range. This is a very good exercise to obtain symmetry on the legs (anterior and posterior) in cases of underdeveloped/undertrained hamstrings.
