We fail to recognize our abilities until we encounter limitations secondary to an impairment. This is a case of radioulnar (forearm) fracture with internal fixation (rod). The individual presents with limitations of motion, pain, weakness and lost of dexterity/coordination on his right hand. The challenge for me is not easy; that is to give this person’s life back. Yes, life that is the same with all my other patients. This man with his hand puts food to their table every day, with the same hand consoles his crying kid or play with him, with the same hand holds his Queen’s hand snug anywhere they go to show his affection, etc. The man’s injured hand is part of his life like all of us. The exercise of moving a plastic pipe from one end to the opposite with just his fingers and thumb (shifting) looks so easy on the video, but the muted groaning sound and the affect on the patient (not shown) is just so heart breaking, it made me realize and thankful that I still have both hands intact to share the gift of healing and hope to my patients. My work here is not yet done. With a good mix of therapy, compliance, hard work and patience from this patient, we will reach our end goal.
